Organisations around the world provide guidance and assistance on all areas of the museum workplace. Many of these organisations are specific to a particular region or country.
American Alliance of Museums
The American Alliance of Museums’ mission is to nurture excellence in museums through advocacy and service.
Australasian Registrars Committee
Representing and promoting the role of registrars and registration practices in cultural institutions within Australia and New Zealand, and on an international level.
Canadian Museums Association
The Canadian Museums Association is the national organisation for the advancement of the Canadian museum community.
Canadian Heritage Information Network (CHIN)
CHIN enables museums and other heritage institutions to connect with each other and their audiences through digital technologies.
Collections Trust
The professional association for collections management. Collections Trust develop SPECTRUM, an open and freely available collections management standard. It is recognised internationally as the primary specification for collections management activity in museums. Vernon Systems is an official SPECTRUM Partner, helping the standard to evolve and working to ensure our products remain compliant.
Emerging Museum Professionals
Emerging Museum Professionals NZ (EMPNZ) is a forum for young and/or emerging professionals working in New Zealand museums and galleries to connect, share and network with each other and others in the heritage sector.
The Getty Research Institute
Dedicated to furthering knowledge and advancing understanding of the visual arts. Its Research Library with special collections of rare materials and digital resources serves an international community of scholars and the interested public. The Getty develop vocabulary lists, such as the Art and Architecture Thesaurus, and data standards, such as the Categories for the Description of Works of Art guidelines.
Museum Computer Network (MCN)
MCN fosters innovation and excellence by supporting professionals who seek to transform the way their cultural organizations reach, engage and educate their audiences using digital technologies. MCN runs a yearly North American museum technology conference.

A collaborative space for professionals creating culture, science and heritage online. The organisation runs yearly museum technology conferences.
Museums Aotearoa
New Zealand’s professional association for public museums and art galleries, and those who work in or with them.
Museums Association (UK)
The leading voice for the UK museum sector. A membership organisation for everyone working in museums, galleries and heritage.
Museums Australia
The national Australian organisation for the museums sector, committed to the conservation, continuation and communication of Australia’s heritage.
National Services Te Paerangi (NSTP)
National Services Te Paerangi is a department within New Zealand’s national museum, Te Papa. NSTP works in partnership with museums, galleries and iwi (tribes) in New Zealand, offering a range of practical and strategic programmes aimed at strengthening the sector. NSTP promotes and supports the NZMuseums website in partnership with Vernon Systems.
South African Museums Associations (SAMA)
SAMA is the professional body concerned with South Africa’s heritage. SAMA provides leadership in the management of the country’s diverse natural and cultural heritage for the enrichment of all people.
