Sketchfab is a platform for sharing 3D digital models. It’s used for sharing models of everything from artwork to architectural elements, and from objects up to large scale buildings. Historic Environment Scotland have been using Sketchfab to share a variety of models and you can see all of them on Historic Environment Scotland’s Sketchfab profile page.
As some of the models are of collection objects, the next logical step was to reference these from Vernon CMS and publish them as part of their Vernon Browser online collection site. Each model has its own page on the Sketchfab website, so the link to this page is added to the appropriate object record in Vernon CMS in the External File field. A new term was added to the External File Category field for ‘Sketchfab model’ and a symbolic (calculated) field exports just the Sketchfab links from the External File field based on this category.
Lastly, we’ve customised the Historic Environment Scotland Vernon Browser site to automatically embed the Sketchfab 3D model viewer on the object detail page whenever there is a link to Sketchfab.
