Deakin University’s Art Collection has been in existence since the University’s inception 40 years ago, and consists of around 1600 diverse pieces. The collection is housed across Deakin’s four campuses: Melbourne (Burwood), the Waterfront and Waurn Ponds campuses in Geelong, and Warrnambool.
The collection itself is structured and well balanced, and includes artworks of excellence and significance by principally Australian contemporary artists, in a wide range of media including paintings, ceramics, works on paper and sculpture.
The collection broadly comprises four main categories:
• The Premium Collection, focusing on the work of contemporary Australian artists who have a record of practice and development of their art form, and are well represented in public collections
• The Campus Collection, featuring student, Alumni and staff artworks across a wide range of media
• The Artists’ Book Collection, representing examples of Australian and international artists’ books and limited editions
• The Sculpture Collection is a significant body of large and small sculpture, and maquettes from a range of well-known contemporary Australian artists.
The Art Gallery at the Melbourne (Burwood) campus provides an exciting venue for the University’s program of exhibitions and arts events. These include curated exhibitions drawn from the University’s art collection, group and solo exhibitions by significant contemporary Australian artists, travelling exhibitions and selected student, staff and alumni work.
The Art Collection and Galleries Unit team is: Leanne Willis, Manager, Art Collection and Galleries; Emma Cox, Curator; Roxanna Richens, Art Collection Officer and Julie Nolan, Administrative Officer.
